Wow, this at has been one heck of a a week and change. I have not been the best blogger but thank goodness that most of the students have been so great about updating thir blogs. The first week was filled with many challenges and all of the students have been through a wide range of emotions. There has been such little free time between the intense four hour classes, becoming acustumed our new host country, and helping the students to adjust to the new environment.
Taking off from Philadelphia it was exciting to see the students who hade never flown before. There was a lot of excitement and a little fear. Without too much delay we were rolling down the runway and we were off. After a layover in Atlanta we arived in Guatemala City, Guatemala. We had heard rumors that the air port was one area where travelers should be aware of their suroundings, but I found it to be clean and quiet. At least until we got outside! We were picked up by a pair of vans from the language schools and began our drive from Guatemala City to Antigua.
After a short drive we arrived at the our home-stays in Antigua. The mother and father in my homestay is Jose and Lucky. Lucky is an excellent cook and I have been able to try many of the traditional dishes of Guatemala. One of my favorates is a simple chicken soup served with a spicy green hot sauce on the side to kick it up a notch! Jose has a great sense of humor, in any language, and he makes everyone feel at home.
